Millions of women (and some men) have spider veins. Spider veins are small unsightly clusters of red, blue or purple veins that most commonly appear on the thighs, calves and ankles. It’s estimated that at least half of the adult female population are bothered by spider veins. A number of factors contribute to the development of spider veins, including heredity, pregnancy, weight gain, prolonged sitting or standing, and trauma. Spider veins usually take on one of three basic patterns:

  • A true spider shape with a group of veins radiating outward from a dark central point.
  • They may be arborizing and will resemble tiny branch-like shapes.
  • Simple linear spider veins that appear as thin separate lines. Commonly seen on the inner knee, whereas the arborizing pattern often appears on the outer thigh in a sunburst or cartwheel distribution.

Spider veins are not the same as varicose veins. Varicose veins are larger, usually more than 4 millimeters in diameter, darker in color and they tend to bulge. Varicose veins are also more likely to be painful. Surgical treatment or endovascular laser therapy is usually necessary to treat varicose veins.
